Álvarez Rubio, Juan José

Jurist (European Law/International Private Law)

Juan José Álvarez Rubio (Zumaia, 1964) is a Professor of International Private Law at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He obtained his degree at the UPV/EHU, receiving a special academic mention at the end of his degree and graduating with distinction and honours. Extraordinary Doctorate Award (1995).

Juanjo Álvarez is an Advisor and Attorney for the CUATRECASAS law firm, Secretary of GLOBERNANCE (Institute for Democratic Governance), and was Secretary General of the Basque Council for European Movement (EUROBASK/CVME) (May 2003-2012). He is currently President of the FEDIP (Spanish Forum for International Private Law).

Likewise, he was designated as an expert in civil justice, borders, personal data protection, and security by the EUROPEAN COMMISSION (Directorate-General for Justice, Freedom, and Security) in 2007.

He is the author of ten case studies, and has contributed to over one hundred collective pieces and scholarly articles in scientific journals in the areas of interregional law, international procedural law, maritime law, international trade law, international trade arbitration, international family law, and case law commentary.

He won the Eusko-Ikaskuntza-Laboral Kutxa Prize of Humanities, Culture, Arts and Social Sciences in 2015. He was named corresponding member of Jakiunde on 9 November 2018.
