Gimeno Ullastres, Juan

Economist

Juan Gimeno Ullastres (1950, Madrid) is Professor of Applied Economics, Political Economics and Public Finance at the National Distance Education University, UNED, of Spain. He holds a degree in Economics and Business Sciences, and in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also obtained his Phd.

His main lines of research are taxation, funding for autonomous communities, social policies, and the distribution of income.

Professor Gimeno was the former chancellor of the UNED; coordinator of the Doctorate Programmes on Public Economics and Health Economics; director of several postgraduate programmes on the management of clinical units and non profit making organisations; sits on the Boards of Trustees of the Comillas Foundation, National Library, Instituto Cervantes, Economists Without Borders Foundation, and Universia Governing Board. He is the founder of the Revista de Economía Aplicada (Journal of Applied Economics) and sits on the executive and editorial boards of journals such as Hacienda Pública en España (Public Finance in Spain), and Estudios sobre Consumo y Economía Política (Studies on Consumption and Political Economics).

Before becoming chancellor of the UNED, he was vice-chancellor of the UNED, as well as vice-chancellor of the Menéndez Pelayo International University; technical secretary general of the Ministry of Education and Science; and secretary general of the Instituto Cervantes.

Juan Gimeno received an Outstanding PhD Thesis Award from the Complutense University of Madrid. He also received the Institute of Fiscal Studies Award, the Spanish Economic and Social Council Research Award, and the UNED Award for Best Teaching Material (2001).
