Physicist (Condensed matter), Honorary President of Jakiunde

Pedro Miguel Etxenike Landiribar (1950, Isaba), is professor of Condensed Matter Physics at the University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU; first president of Jakiunde; president of the Donostia International Physics Center; president of the CIC Nanogune Research Center; post-doctoral fellow at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and  nordita fellow at Lund and Copenhagen. He holds doctorates from Cambridge and Barcelona Universities.

He has authored over 300 articles in specialist journals. His lines of research focus on condensed matter physics, electron microscopy and the interaction of charges and radiation with matter.

He is a member of the Trilateral Commission and MAPFRE Norte.

From 1980 to 1983, professor Etxenike was the Basque Government's minister of Education, and from 1983 to 1984 minister of Education and Culture and spokesperson. He has been an overseas fellow at Churchill College and visiting professor at Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory, and is a fellow of the American Physics Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Real Academia de las Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales.

Pedro Miguel Etxenike has received the following awards: Munibe, Euskadi, Dupont, Príncipe de Viana, Príncipe de Asturias, Max Planck, Iberdrola, Nacional Blas Cabrera, Manel Xifra Boada, Sabino Arana and the Great Cross of Alfonso X the Wise, and the Gold Medal of the UPV/EHU, City of San Sebastian, Spanish Royal Society of Physics, and Gold Medal of Gipuzkoa and Gold Medal of Navarre. He has been named Honorary Doctor by the University of Valladolid and Public University of Navarre, is a doctor of Science from Cambridge University and overseas member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts. He was named 1998 Basque Personality of the Year, and is Honorary Citizen of the town of Isaba.
