Doctor (Physiology)

Juan José Goiriena de Gandarias y Gandarias (1948. Vitoria-Gasteiz) is professor of Physiology at the University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU. He obtained his degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Salamanca, and has lectured and conducted research at the universities of Oviedo, Murcia and the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

His lines of research focus on applying the physiology of strain to sports medicine and the metabolism of adipose tissue.

He heads the Basurto Medical Institute Specialising in Sports Medicine and is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the Royal Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Goiriena has supervised 20 doctoral theses, 5 of which received outstanding PhD thesis awards, authored over 80 research papers and articles, of which those published in the British Journal of Pharmacology are of special note: Enzyme; Med. Sci. Sports Exerc; J Appl. Physiol. etc.; and has also participated in several books. His latest research projects include those relating to the physiology of cycling, which have been published in the most widely-read sports journals (Sport Sciences).

Dr. Goiriena was the Basque Government's deputy minister of Health and Consumption (1984 and 1987), vice-chancellor of the University of the Basque Country (1991-1996) and chairman of the Society of Basque Studies, Eusko Ikaskuntza, (1996 and 2001).

Among other awards, Juan José Goiriena de Gandarias y Gandarias received an Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award for his Thesis in 1973, and the UPV/EHU Gold Medal.
