Goirizelaia Ordorika, Iñaki

Engineer (Electronics nad Telecommunication)

Iñaki Gorizelaia Ordorika (1958, Mungia) is professor of Telematics Engineering at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications. He conducted his studies at the University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU's Faculty of Engineering at Bilbao (ETSI).

In 1984/85, he spent some time as an international collaborator at the Stanford Research Institute in California. His research centred on the study of the industrial applications of the interpretation of computer imagery. This was the basis of his doctoral thesis: New architecture and algorithms for the recognition of partially visible pieces by means of artificial vision, which was written in Basque.

On returning from the USA, he worked at LABEIN research laboratories, where he contributed to the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

Professor Gorizelaia pursued his teaching and research activity as a professor at the UPV/EHU's Department of Electronics and Telecommunications. Between 1987 and 1993, he concentrated his research on the interpretation of images from automised visual inspection and its industrial applications, whose results materialised in the form of four patents, of which two are international.

His research into technology for electronic voting systems enabled him to spend a six-month period at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Media Laboratory as visiting professor.

Iñaki Gorizelaia has been deputy Vice-Chancellor of University-Business Relations, Academic Organisation (2004/2005), and the Biscay Campus (2005/2008).

After that he held the post of Chancellor of the UPV/EHU (2008/2012 and 2012/2016), and was member of the Advisory Council on Basque, Basque Council of Culture and the I2T Research Group.

At present, he has returned to university teaching, as well as holding the presidency of the PuntuEUS Foundation.
