Álvarez Rubio, Juan José

Juan José Álvarez Rubio (Zumaia, 1964) is a Professor of International Private Law at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He obtained his degree at the UPV/EHU, receiving a special academic mention at the end of his degree and graduating with distinction and honours. Extraordinary Doctorate Award (1995).

He is Secretary of GLOBERNANCE (Institute for Democratic Governance) and was Secretary General of the Basque Council for European Movement (EUROBASK/CVME) (May 2003-2012).

Designated as an expert in civil justice, borders, personal data protection and security by the EUROPEAN COMMISSION (Directorate-General for Justice, Freedom and Security).

He is the author of ten case studies and has contributed to over one hundred collective pieces and scholarly articles in scientific journals in the areas of interregional law, international procedural law, maritime law, international trade law, international trade arbitration, international family law, and case law commentary.

He exercises his profession as a lawyer and business consultant in the areas of compliance and international contracting and is a member of the board of trustees of the IKERBASQUE foundation, the UNED Bergara foundation, the Eguia-Careaga foundation (SIIS) and the MATIA foundation.

He won the Eusko-Ikaskuntza-Laboral Kutxa Prize of Humanities, Culture, Arts and Social Sciences in 2015. He was named corresponding member of Jakiunde on 9 November 2018.
