Asua González, José Mª

José M. Asua is Professor of Chemical Engineering of the University of the Basque Country and Scientific Director of the Basque Center for Macromolecular Design and Engineering, POLYMAT Fundazioa at Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain.

He earned his BS in Chemistry and MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bilbao and the PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Zaragoza (catalyst deactivation). He did postdoctoral research at the University of Liege (Belgium) working on hydrodynamics of Trickle Bed Reactors.

He spent sabbatical years at Lehigh University (USA) as a Fulbright scholar and University of Waterloo (Canada) as Visiting Professor.  He has also been Visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) and at Dortmund University (Germany).

His research has been focussed on the fundamental investigation of industrially relevant polymerization processes, field where he has published one book and edited another two, published more than 400 articles, given over 80 plenary and invited lectures, and more than 250 conferences and poster presentations. He is co-author of 13 patents and has advised 61 PhD Thesis. He has served as Associate Editor of Polymer Reaction Engineering and as member of the Editorial Board of Chemical Engineering Journal (2000-2017), Macromolecular Materials and Engineering (2004-), Macromolecular Reaction Engineering (2007-) and ACS Macro Letters (2022-). Professor Asua has been very active in the organization of international meetings, and was the director of one NATO Advanced Study Institute.

He received the 1993 Rhone-Poulenc Award for Clean Technologies for his research in control of polymerization reactors, the 2005 Euskadi Research Award in Science and Technology, the 2015 “Prof. Martínez Moreno” award in Invention and Innovation of the University of Sevilla and the García-Cabrerizo Fundation, and the 2017 award to the Excellence in Research form the Spanish Chemical Society (RSEQ). He is member of the Conseil Scientifique of CNRS.

Professor Asua has devoted substantial efforts to strengthen the University-Industry relationships. He has supervised more than 40 industrially funded projects, and consults for several companies in Europe, USA and India. He launched the Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) on Polymerization in Dispersed Media. Members of this ILP are some of the major international producers of these polymers. He co-founded the Research Institute for Polymer Materials (POLYMAT) (https://www.ehu.eus/eu/web/polymat/the-institute), a University research organization that provides comprehensive research services to polymer industries.  He founded the Basque Center for Macromolecular Design and Engineering, POLYMAT Fundazioa (http://www.polymat.eu/en/home) focused on use-inspired fundamental research on synthesis, assembly and processing of polymers that in concert with theory and simulation enable the development of the technologies needed to address some of the 21st Century challenges such as energy, health care and sustainability.
