Marcaide Osoro, Jon

Juan-María (Jon) Marcaide Osoro (1950, Elgueta) has been professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Valencia since 1991 and research professor on the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) (on voluntary leave of absence). He studied physics at the universities of Zaragoza, Complutense of Madrid, Edinburgh and St. Andrews, and holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He pursued his career at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (Bonn), Siemens AG (Munich) and Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia-CSIC. He has been a Stevenson Foundation scholar, scholarship-holder at the ITP Foundation, and fellow of the Max Planck Society, and a full member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences since 2003.

Professor Marcaide has supervised 10 doctoral theses and published over 200 scientific articles (6 in Nature and/or Science) on astronomical research using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and optical interferometric techniques. He is author of 3 patents, has been advisor to NASA and sat on numerous international committees: NATO's ASI/AWR; the European VLBI Program; European Space Agency's Very Low Frequency Array Science Team; Division X; International Astronomical Union Commission 40;  European Commission FP5-FP7 and so on.

He was the co-founder, vice-chairman and chairman of the Spanish Society of Astronomy; Valencia University's first head of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Department; visiting professor at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics; and visiting astronomer at the Paris and European Southern observatories, and Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics.

Professor Marcaide has received several academic awards, the most significant being the 2004 Euskadi Research Award.
